Description
1952 Dodge M-37 Power Wagon
NO TITLE-SOLD ON A BILL OF SALE ONLY
The Dodge M37 34 ton 4x4 truck (G741) was Dodge's follow-up to their successful WC Series from World War II. Introduced in 1951, it was used extensively by the United States armed forces during the Korean war. In the 1970s, they were replaced by the Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) based 14-ton trucks Kaiser M715 (late 1960s), and Dodge's M880/M890 series (1970s).
Not unlike the Hummer series, the public had a hankering for military style vehicles, so Dodge made them available to the public. This consignment is a barn find in that it does not currently run and will need some TLC from the capable hands of a restorer to help it come back to life.
Exterior
In true 1952 form, this large and in charge 4-wheel pickup truck with front winch weighs in at nearly 6,000lbs! You can do some serious damage with that winch, (a Braden LU-4 PTO operated 7,500lb capacity), or do some serious helping out. This resides right in front of this truck which has a big steel grid grille, squared off design with a wide hood and large fenders with exterior mounted headlights on them. A squared off 2 door cab with a small running board below the door to assist the get in and this is showing in an interesting camo patina paint which is peeling off with some rusting underneath and areas off orange paint underneath which happens to look great with the camo. In back, a deep pickup style bed in full metal shows some surface rust and invasive rust dancing with orange painted parts. Some stake sides create a higher border and allow for more cargo to fit into the bed. A spare tire is on this bed. The back gate is in a similar condition to the bed, and no rear bumper is currently attached. 16-inch steel wheels are wrapped in standard military issue non directional rubber tread tires.
Interior
Opening the interior camo peeling painted door panels it's all metal and utilitarian here kids. This reveals a tough all metal interior with a diamond plate floor, well-worn and peeling paint metal dash, and a 60/40 bench seat configuration with the back of the seat missing on the passenger side. The headliner is old felting, and all the interior surfaces have a coating of olive drab paint, and surface rusting going on.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 230.2ci L head 6-cylinder power plant. There is a 1 bbl Carter carburetor atop, and an NP-420 4-speed manual transmission on back. Also noted is an NP-200 transfer case with a high and low level gear ratio available through the selection of the correct shifter in the cab's floor. The rear axle is a full floating (Hypoid ratio)5.83:1 with a front universal drive by New Process (hence the NP-### designation)
Undercarriage
Underneath we see a heavy coating of surface rust, some undercoating peeling, and a bit of invasive rust on the underside of the rear roll pan structural steel that runs beneath the gate. Wagner hydraulic drum brakes are all around and steering is a HD Gemmer Model B-60 version which is a worm and sector type mechanism.
With some diligent work, and if you like the worn look, just mechanical upgrades to get her running again. This 1952 version can be brought back to large and in charge and you will be the owner of 1 cool big military style truck. Run for ammo and MRE's, before the shit comes down!
