Selling a pair of non-matching Miller & Kreisel SS-150THX andMPS-1525 MkII
Tripole Surrounds
The SS-150THX is from the late 1990s designed for home theater while the
MPS-1525 MII is the professional studio version (THX PM3) a few years later. The primary differences with the MPS-1525 MkII version are
the logo change in the grille, a label recessed in the speaker front baffle, and the rear panel using all metal biding posts along with the different text.
As far as I can tell, the transducer compliment is identical as well as the crossover as they measure very similar.
The
MPS-1525 MkII is from the era with a change in market branding using MK Sound rather than the founders names Miller & Kreisel Sound. The units are identical in size and shape and with the grilles on, one would never know they were different (excluding the logo difference).
These surrounds are a great pair for the Ls and Rs locations in any high quality home theater no matter the LCR brand and are still considered to be one of the best diffuse surround speakers. They can also be used for the rear surrounds following the positive phase facing outward.
Components included:
Left Surround
MPS-1525 MkII (Tripole)
Right Surround SS-150THX (Tripole)
- missing sticker pointing to positive front facing phase but verified by measurement
Some noteworthy information:
THX Ultra Certified (SS-150THX) and THX PM3 Approved (
MPS-1525 MkII)
Includes a front 1" Tweeter with 5.25" Woofer and 3.5" Full-range of each side
Configurable modes: Bipole for diffuse wide soundfield or Tripole mode for dipole and direct radiating front monopole using rear jumper (included)
Surrounds are location specific with sticker pointing forward for positive phase direction. SS-150THX is missing sticker but was measured to be the Right surround
Rear threaded hole for wall or stand mounting (the extra screws on the rear panel were from a previous non-standard mounting method and were left in so any potential air leak is not present
Both grilles have one broken plastic mounting pin but are still secure when installed
The MPS-1525 MkII unit has a small hole in the grille
To make the surrounds look the same, recommend removing the MK logo on the MPS-1525 MkII unit grille
10 lbs per Surround
80 Hz to 20 kHz in Tripole mode
Rated at 200 W
SS-150THX manufactured around 1999-2000 looking at the serial number being 5000 units higher than a 1997 units I've owned.
MPS-1525 MkII manufactured around 2001-2002 (later units had red and black binding posts)
Seller measured and listened to these speakers to guarantee they work without any problems.
See the measured frequency response in Tripole mode showing close matching
Listening evaluations reveal no problems at low to high playback levels - the dipole area is wide with Tripole mode adding location focus

These speakers are made with high quality materials yielding a long life span (especially the rubber transducer surrounds that don't breakdown like foam)
New version of this surround speaker is the S150T at 00/pair with the same transducer compliment, sizing and weight
