Description

Original Howard Fogg water color painting commissioned by Dan Abbott for the cover of this book "Stairway to the Stars".
"Stairway to the Stars" is a classic Colorado book on the 3 ft. narrow gauge Argentine Central Railway.
The Argentine Central Ry. was built from the Colorado & Southern Railway in Silver Plume, Colorado to Waldorf, Colorado and then onward to the summit of Mount McClellan (14,270 ft.)
Construction began on August 1, 1905. The line was opened to Waldorf on August 1, 1906; a distance of six miles.
The Railway was steeply graded and sharply curved with a standard of a 6% curve. The line required six switchbacks on the ascent.
Due to these challenges, the Argentine Central used a total of seven geared Shay locomotives over the years.
Later reorganized as the Argentine & Gray's Peak Railway.
This painted was commissioned by author Dan Abbott in 1970. Renowned railroad artist Howard Fogg was not a huge fan of narrow gauge railroads and was reportedly inspired to do the painting by the challenge of painting the "wrong side" of a Shay locomotive.
