Ten Spikes to the Rail: Twohy Brothers-- Early Day Northwestern Railroad Builders by John Roger Towhy. FIRST EDITION Hardcover Book,1983. Has vintage photo pages throughout. Book is like new! This book is close to a first hand look at the history and development of the Northern Railroad with broad context in the larger history of America in two centuries. It is carefully researched and its author, John R. Twohy, is a direct descendant of Judge John Twohy and the Twohy brothers. In a sense, it is a living history because numerous of the tracks, bridges, roads, and tunnels built by the Twohy Brothers still stand. A drive along Oregon's north/south Hwy. 97 through Madras, Oregon and along Hwy. 84 east/west through the Columbia River Gorge brings this book to life. The book maintains a larger perspective by paralleling a personal family story alongside events such as Irish immigration and early westward settlement in the 1800's, politics, business, culture and development of the West. This story travels from Kenmare, Ireland to New York, the upper Michigan Peninsula, St. Paul, Spokane, Portland, San Francisco, San Jose, and Los Angeles with many stops in between. The Twohy Brothers contracted with the famous James J. Hill and competed against Edward H. Harriman (a character in the film Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid), two prominent railroad barons of the time. Please email with any questions.
